SURCULUS TABLE LAMP
This Surculus collection of lamps was inspired by the ever present and regenerating force of nature. A prolonged stay in the country inspired the artist, Barbara Palatin-Doyle, to capture growing branches and sprouts in an abstract bronze sculpture. The Surculus alludes to a branch that undulates its way up the gently lit paper shade and reaches beyond it with its finely polished ornement. Darker patination and deeper ridges at the bottom of the lamp transition to gentler ridges and lighter colors at the top, symbolizing tender new growth and the rejuvenation of the old. The folds of the handmade paper shade echo the ridges in the bronze base and catch the light like delicate flower petals. The body is executed as a bronze sculpture in the lost wax method.
Each piece is made by hand, carefully polished and patinated. Therefore, each lamp is unique. The shade is crafted from Japanese Hosho paper.
Surculus combines the old traditions of handcrafted bronze as well as new technology. Its form and purpose evolves from a traditional candlestick to a contemporary portable, wireless, rechargeable LED light.
